So you’re sitting in front of your computer screen in your workplace, one moment you’re laughing at a funny video then the next moment you’re crying. All of a sudden the searing pain of things you can’t change but you want to, enters your consciousness and it stays there like an annoying tick on your head. Every scene is happening in real time but for you it’s vividly occurring in slow motion- 4D edition.
Welcome to my world. If you’re having a similar experience, it’s a sign. It’s an uncomfortable place to be in but you’re not alone. Here are some things that helped me move forward despite the stress:
1. Identify “The Thing”
What’s more difficult than fighting a battle? Fighting a battle wherein you don’t know who your enemy is. To be able to successfully slay that dragon of stress, you must know it’s source. Identify what it is, where it comes from and why it affects you. Knowing your adversary not only affects your mindset, but it also gives you an idea on how to defeat it.
2. Grab Your Pen and Paper
"The pen is mightier than the sword" an old rubbed off faded saying goes. Cliché as cliché can be but it is mighty true. Grab that pen and paper and start writing. You may begin by listing your "The Thing" or "The Thing Things" Let your imagination run, swim, hike, dive, join a triathlon and bungee jump, the most important part is to ink it down. There is relief in the permanence of words and doodles, try it. It’s good for your feelings. Let it go. (Take this article for example)
Now here comes the toughest part, Analyze and Act. Now that you know your thing, after you’ve exhausted everything down, it’s time to act upon it. Easy to say but it’s the most grueling of all to do. Face your arch nemesis. If it’s a task that you need to finish but have lost the motivation to, DO IT! It only piles up if you don’t. If it’s a person that you have to talk to, set aside at least a few minutes. If it’s focus that’s missing, pause and realign. Cross out that list 100% at a time. No distractions. It’s challenging but your sword will definitely be sharper after. (Deep breaths)
4. Laugh It Off
Humor goes a long way. Don’t let work, or lack of work or someThing else rob you off from enjoying the beauty of life. One of my favorite films says “La vita e bella.” Life is beautiful. Shake off the cobwebs, nests and dusts that have accumulated in you. When you have done you’re part but it seems it’s not enough, shift then charge it to experience. This generation says #YOLO. Indeed. Live wisely, a smile wouldn’t hurt.
This should actually be the first tip on the list. When you’re at the end of your rope, or even before you reach that rope, pray. What a relief it is to know that someone understands. The mere fact that you’re still breathing means another shot at starting over. Open that Book of yours, yes the one you’ve been ignoring like you have divine allergy. Read it and discover that you aren’t alone in your journey. Discover how individuals who’ve been through the same troubles and even heavier burdens overcame. Learn from them, it might just change your life.
